Episode Guide and Video Clips - Mixed Bag Camping

Overview

This week, Shaun demonstrates that you don't necessarily need to stay at a resort or lodge to enjoy a weekend away fishing. Shaun is joined by friend Kathy Connor and Hook More Fish Television staff members, Aron Locke and Danielle Mayer. The four set out from the town of Buckhorn, Ontario and head to a secluded island on Lower Buckhorn Lake. After setting up camp on the island the group head onto the water for some mixed bag fishing action. The girls decide to target pan fish from their 15ft canoe, while the boys head out in Shaun's boat casting shorelines and weed edges for musky and bass.

Camping is a great, inexpensive option for a weekend getaway; it is also an ideal alternative to busy lodges and resorts. The unmatched solitude offered by a deserted island is simply perfect for those seeking peace and quiet for a day or two. This somewhat self-catering and self-sufficient experience also gives those with a limited budget the opportunity to experience our near north at very close quarters. There are literally thousands of lakes in Ontario just waiting to be explored, just check with your local tourism office for lake info in your area and get out there to do some camping. Small dome tents are a great asset when camping on islands. You don't want to go big as you will often need to pitch your tents in tight areas. A 3 to 5 man tent is perfect for fitting between trees and rocks etc.

Camping can be fun even if you're not fishing, since it's a great way to get out and experience nature at very close quarters with the whole family. To make your trip more enjoyable, prepare a list of everything you'll need before departing. It is important to be prepared!

Shaun's summary of the shoot: "I have to say that this was one of my favorite shows to shoot, quite simply because I love camping, especially with a great group of friends. It's not always possible for me to get away for a weekend on an island anymore, as I'm so busy. This was a fantastic treat. Reason being is that this is how it all started for me in Canada; I started out with a 16ft canoe, a couple of dome tents and some fishing gear. While we were dating, my wife and I would head up to one of the Kawartha Lakes every weekend. We would rush home from work to our apartment every Friday and pack all our gear into the elevator, we'd then load it all in the car and off we went to a friend's house to pick up the canoe. It was quite the sight as we headed along the 401 in an RX-7 with a canoe strapped to the roof and the trunk filled to capacity. These are some of the fondest memories I have in Canada and are the reason I decided to make this beautiful country my home. After a week in a busy office, you simply can't beat the solitude of your own "private oasis" on a secluded island in the middle of a lake. I don't know of a better way for one to unwind!
Having friends along on a trip like this makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Fortunately for me, Kathy, Danielle and Aron all love camping as much as I do. Kathy is an especially competent outdoors enthusiast; she has worked at many kids camps and is a qualified canoe instructor. Despite the wet end to the weekend, we had a great time and we are all eager to get back out there as soon as the snow melts".
