Episode Guide and Video Clips - Hard Water Perch

Overview

For many anglers the winter can be a somewhat sad time. They have to put their boats away for the winter and sit impatiently waiting for the snow and ice to melt. On this week's show, Shaun exposes a great winter fishing activity that is available very close to Toronto. Join Shaun and his good friend Aaron Shirley as they head out to Lake Simcoe for some ice fishing. This fun winter pastime is the ideal cure for mid winter "cabin fever". The boys head out of Gilford, Ontario to demonstrate some inexpensive options for hard water fishing action with basic equipment.

This cold weather sport is a great way to introduce youngsters into ice fishing. Quite often these scrappy little fish are schooled up so tight that over 100 fish can be landed in a morning. This is just what you need to prevent the kids from getting board! In the area that Shaun and Aaron are fishing today, there are also some very inexpensive ice hut rentals available. These huts offer a base on the ice for the day and with their built-in propane heaters they work as a great "warm up" spot for the family.

Shaun suggests getting the kids away from their computers & video games by getting them out on the ice to take advantage of this Canadian winter tradition. It's not only healthy; you'll have fun too!

Shaun's summary of the shoot: "I always have fun fishing with Aaron, however this was a little different. Many people know that I'm not a huge ice fisherman; I just never really seemed to get into it. Whenever I do head out, I'll generally target walleye, pike or lake trout, not perch. When Aaron called me to let me know that they were pounding the perch on Lake Simcoe, it was hard for me to get excited. Despite my lack of enthusiasm I decided to give it a shot and due to the numbers of fish that they were reporting, we decided to shoot a show at the same time. This turned out to be a great shoot based on two factors. The first being Aaron's ability to present himself well in front of the camera and secondly the non-stop perch action. We managed to wrap this show up in record time without sacrificing quality.
Well, I have to admit it - I HAD A BLAST! We caught fish after fish on virtually every bait we dropped down the hole. Despite the very cold day, Aaron and I had a lot of fun together. After all my doubts about perch fishing, I now highly recommend it and just can't get enough of it".
