Episode Guide and Video Clips - Shallow Water Salmon

Overview

This week Shaun and Cyndi compete in a local salmon derby in Pickering, Ontario. There are many local derbies that take place in various areas throughout the season. These events can be a great way to meet fellow anglers and are a great way to get together with people in your community. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful lady by the name of Sharon Sauve who single-handedly organizes the East Shore Derby. For those of you that do not have a derby running in your area, Shaun will demonstrate that it is not that hard to put one together. If you do not have salmon in your area, why not set up a derby for other species that are available.

On this week's episode, Shaun exposes some very successful shallow water techniques for early fall pre-spawn chinook salmon. He utilizes Rapala jointed crank-baits pulled behind small offshore planer boards. This stealthy approach enables lures to be set out away from the boat, helping to target fish that may otherwise be spooked by the sound of the motor in anywhere from 11ft to 30ft of water. Many of the boats that entered the derby headed out to familiar spots in open water. Tune in to see how Cyndi and Shaun make out as they break away from the pack and try something a little different.

Shaun's summary of the shoot: "I've been fishing this derby for 4 years now and it's always a lot of fun. I've met a lot of great people through this derby and it's now become something that I look forward to every year. Sharon does a fantastic job of organizing the derby and she selflessly gives up her time to set up this event. I know I speak for everyone that enters each year when I say that we all enjoy and greatly appreciate the wonderful job she does".

I would also like to thank to The Wing Shack in Ajax for putting on a great spread for us. This is a fairly new restaurant to the area and I have to tell you it's a great place that has the best wings in town, without a doubt! Businesses like this are generally more than willing to work with events like this and will provide group rates, making the event more affordable. There simply isn't a better way to finish off the day than having a few drinks and some good food with a group of friends".
